A Brief History Of Domaine Thibault Liger Belair

The Liger Belair family has passed down the tradition of winemaking for over 250 years.

In 1720, Claude Philibert Marey (the mayor of Nuits Saint George) founded the C Marey House to sell his wines. Guillaume Felix Marey, the son of Claude Marey, and Comte Liger Belair partnered up and passed on the Domaine until Vincent Liger Belair became the winemaker. 

Vincents son, Thibault Liger Belair, took over the vines in 2001, creating Domaine Thibault Liger Belair.

Thibault studied viticulture and enology for six years and worked for a communication firm in Paris. He started one of the first internet companies (Wine and Co) dedicated to discovering and selling fine wine. 

Thibault’s first harvest was from the Nuits St George vineyard in 2002. The Domaine has been enriching its range ever since, acquiring the Vosne Romanee vineyard, the Richebourg Grand Cru vineyard, and the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru vineyard.

Thibault Liger Belair noticed the soils in his vineyards were grey and compact, and this affected the quality of the grapes.

He introduced organic farming, and the soils shifted to a healthy, well-draining black. He said, “I do not practice biological culture as a sacrifice to fashion but by vocation.” Therefore, keeping biological agriculture in mind is essential to Thibault.
