The wine estate is located in the Mosel Valley region of Germany and is owned by the legendary winemaker Markus Molitor. ‍

Besides a range of Riesling wines (dry, off-dry, and sweet wines), Markus Molitor also produces Pinot Noir red wines and white wines made from Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay grapes.‍

In only 35 years, Markus Molitor expanded his 1.5-hectare vineyard plots to a magnificent 120 hectares. And all of this was achieved in his 20s and 30s.

Around 75% of the vineyards are situated in the Grand Cru sites of the middle Mosel (near Moselle river), while the rest are located on the fertile banks of the Saar river.‍

A Quick History Of Markus Molitor

Markus, the Markus Molitor winery’s eighth-generation winemaker, is the driving force of it’s outstanding success.

Markus, the winery’s eighth-generation winemaker, is the driving force of it’s outstanding success.

Markus inherited his father’s winery in 1984 at the tender age of 20. Even though he was younger and ‘inexperienced’ compared to winemakers of other Mosel wineries, Markus had a clear vision of what he wanted to achieve with his wines.

He wanted to maintain his family’s tradition and produce exceptional terroir-driven wines that showcased Mosel Riesling’s unique characteristics.

Between 2009 and 2012, Markus worked extensively to improve the winery. He purchased Grand-Cru vineyards near the Mosel river. He also introduced more sustainable viticulture practices so that the fruit reflected the beauty of the Mosel terroir.

Today, Markus Molitor wine estate produces 80 unique wines every year!

Markus Molitor Vineyards And Viticulture

Markus Molitor estate has its vineyards in 15 different plots in the Mosel and Saar regions, including the Wehlen, Zeltingen-Rachtig, and Bernkastel wine making villages.

Markus Molitor estate has its vineyards in 15 different plots in the Mosel and Saar regions, including the Wehlen, Zeltingen-Rachtig, and Bernkastel wine making villages.

94% of the vineyards are planted with Riesling, while the rest are planted with small quantities of Pinot NoirPinot Blanc, and Chardonnay.

The vineyards are located on steep slopes and are planted with old vines. Some of these ancient vines are over 100 years old.

The vineyard plots (like Wehlener Klosterberg, Graacher Himmelreich, and Brauneberger) have weathered slate soils with small stones and a considerable iron content.

Be it Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese, Schiefersteil, or Alte Reben Mosel, each wine showcases the unique terroir of Middle Mosel.

Markus practices sustainable viticulture on his steep slope vineyards to get the best flavors of Mosel Riesling. Each vine is gently processed, and experienced teams handpick the physiologically ripe grapes.

Markus Molitor Winemaking Techniques

Besides the unique viticulture, Markus Molitor wines also benefit from traditional winemaking techniques.

Besides the unique viticulture, Markus Molitor wines also benefit from traditional winemaking techniques.

This is what Markus Molitor’s winemaking process looks like:

  • The grapes are carefully selected and separated according to their ripeness levels.

  • The grapes are then moved to the three-storeyed vaulted cellar for fermentation. The cellar’s cool temperature and high humidity maintain the optimal climate for fermentation and wine aging.‍

The grapes are fermented in wooden barrels with natural yeasts at low temperatures for three months.

  • After fermentation, the wine is aged on its lees for a few months before being bottled.

Domaine Markus Molitor’s wines (Auslese, Kabinett, and Spatlese) have three different capsules to distinguish the wine’s taste.

  • White cap denotes dry wines.
  • Gray-green cap denotes off-dry wines.
  • Long gold cap denotes sweet and botrytis wines.
