So how was the Peters estate established in the first place?

Pierre Peters - A Brief History

6040262c6b1c202d2137c709_pierre-peters-7.jpg

In 1858 Luxembourg-native Gaspar Peters married Miss Doue. She owned 2 hectares of vineyards in Les Manil Sur Oger Grand Cru village.

Initially, the grape grower Gaspar and his son Louis Peters sold all grapes to other winemakers.

When Camille Peters took over the grower Champagne house in 1919, he started bottling and selling his production under the name “Camille Peters.” In 1930 Peters bought 2.5 hectares of the Grand Cru Les Chetillons vineyard.

In 1932, Camille’s young son Pierre Peters joined the business. He took over its management after his father’s sudden death, a decade later. He renamed the estate to “Pierre Peters” and released the first vintage in 1946.

Pierre’s son Francois took over the business in 1967 and expanded the vineyard to 17.5 hectares. Under his leadership the fame of the Pierre Peters brand spread worldwide.

His son, Rodolphe Peters (sixth generation) joined the Champagne house in 2007 and currently manages the vineyards and winemaking process.

The Vineyards of Pierre Peters

The Pierre Peters vineyard holdings are 20 hectares and a total of 72 parcels, all of which are situated in the heart of Cote des Blancs.

The grapes from half a hectare of the Chardonnay varietal and 1 hectare of Pinot Noir vines are sold to negociants. This leaves a bit over 18 hectares of Chardonnay grapes, which Rodolphe Peters uses to produce his Champagnes.

The vineyards are located on an east-facing hillside that has good water drainage and water-absorbing chalk soils. This unique terroir protects the land from the harsh western winds and creates the perfect humidity levels for the vines to thrive.

Making Champagne at Pierre Peters

Here’s the winemaking followed at the winery with Rodolphe Peters at the helm:

  • Harvesting: The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-September after 90-95 days of ripening. Peters decides when to harvest his grapes based on advanced analytics and also the taste of the grapes.

The grapes when they have a citrusy fresh taste. Only the healthy grapes are harvested, so the average yields are low - around 18 hl/ha.

  • Pressing: The grape bunches are carefully transported to the press no later than 6 hours after harvest. There they are pressed slowly, so only the finest juice with enhanced minerality and freshness is extracted.
  • Fermentation: This process takes place in small temperature-controlled stainless steel vats.
  • Malolactic fermentation: The cuvee goes through partial or complete malolactic fermentation, depending on the vintage’s acidity.
  • Aging: The wine cuvee ages for an extended time on its lees. After that, the Champagne is disgorged (the lees sediment is removed from the cap.)
  • Bottling: A small amount of liquor is added to the wine to modify the sugar levels, and the bottles are corked.

At a 2016 Heritage Auctions, 12 bottles of Pierre Peters Les Chetillons Cuvee Blanc de Blancs were sold for $1,586.

Pierre Peters’ heritage and superior quality make it highly valuable and sought-after among wine collectors. The small production and high demand make it harder to get a bottle of this exceptional Champagne. So, how can you get this exceptional Champagne and other fine wines from all over the world?
